We are looking for a Senior Lead Software Engineer to fill a position that offers all of the above plus the chance to do something truly meaningful—build software that is improving education for literally millions of students—in a company culture grounded in mutual respect.

Our partner creates software and services that transform education. We are building a SaaS platform with The College Board that is an integral part of the educational experience for more than three million AP and Pre-AP students worldwide: a digital assessment platform that deepens student engagement, while enhancing the instruction teachers are delivering. We're a small company making a big difference, and we're proud of our contribution to advancing remote and in-person learning.

We're looking for a talented Senior DevOps Engineering Lead who has the experience and sound engineering principles to lead initiatives to evolve our cloud-based architecture, and be an individual contributor who has hands-on experience with building, deploying, orchestrating, and managing cloud-native solutions. An ideal candidate will have experience with several of the following: automated CI/CD, observability, SecOps and compliance, Iac and AWS cloud-based provisioning. This role will collaborate directly with our CTO and VP of Engineering to drive technical strategic initiatives, improve developer experience, and help advance the maturity of our platform.

Some of the relevant technologies and areas of interest for this role are listed below. Not all are required, but you should have enough experience to excel in this role.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities to improve developer efficiency and provide infrastructure support to multiple engineering teams
  • Create repeatable processes for provisioning and scaling AWS-based infrastructure to support a SaaS-based application that has varying usage patterns and seasonality.
  • Review cloud cost-spend and identify savings opportunities
  • Provide operations support for SaaS products and underlying infrastructure, including on-call duties
  • Implement observability strategies to identify and improve site reliability
  • Adhere to our Security Operations policies and continually identify opportunities to advance our SecOps best practices
  • Identify improvements to our automated CI/CD pipelines

Requirements and Skills

  • Experience working in a Sr DevOps Engineering role and leading the domain from the ground up. Must demonstrate critical thinking in developing and executing solutions successfully in an active product environment.
  • Working Experience with Cloud Native technologies, Containerization (Docker), and Container Orchestration (ECS or EKS) + Coding.
  • Hands-on experience with scripting and terraform for provisioning cloud-based infrastructure
  • Building and deploying a cloud application to a production environment and maintaining availability and scalability using industry best practices. You will need to demonstrate experience in setting up a database from scratch.
  • Configuring and managing various AWS services, such as VPC, EC2, Lambda, Security Groups, IAM, S3, SQS, RDS, Aurora, and Redshift, is not all that is required.
  • Linux and Windows administration and troubleshooting
  • Configuration Management tools such as Chef, Ansible, or Puppet.
  • Leveraging an APM and Log Management solution for monitoring application health and performance; experience with Grafana and the LGTM stack is a plus
  • CI/CD automation tools such as Jenkins, CircleCI, or Gitlab CI
